Coming This Week: Some 2017 Favorites, Part II

Last week had the techno, the club, a bit of hip-hop. This week takes the tempo up a notch and plays some of my personal favorites from the year that was in the 150-180 BPM range.

There are some faster club tunes, but for the most part that means footwork and drum’n’bass.

2017 was a big year for footwork, with Jlin’s “Black Origami” ending up at the top (or very close to it) of many a year end list (including my own). Another 2017 footwork release that I enjoyed came from well west of Chicago, bastiengoat’s “culp,” out of the SF Bay area. Then there’s an oversight on my part: for whatever reason when I was putting together my 2017 list I thought that Jana Rush’s “Pariah” had come out in 2015. In my defense, a good chunk of the music I picked up in 2017 came out in 2015, and an even bigger chunk of the footwork and D’n’B. I feel bad enough about it that I plan to give that brilliant album its own spotlight some time in the near future…

It was also a big year, for me personally, for D’n’B. I pulled the trigger on two “buy the entire label discography for X% off” Bandcamp deals, one for Lightless Recordings and the other for Architecture Recordings. The number of drum’n’bass episodes I put out in 2017 dwarfed the number in any previous year, as I worked my way through my suddenly huge collection, which also grew with purchases from Samurai Music Group and Nurtured Beatz Recordings. I worried more than once that my audience (such as it is) might rebel, sick and tired of all the breakbeats. It was my luck that I apparently got sick of the ~170BPM hegemony before anyone else, and diversified my mixes (after almost two months).

So, tune in to Radio NOPE this week on Wednesday, at 11/10C to hear the mix! As always, do drop into the chatbox for some chattings.
