Coming This Week: Grey Area Experiment #02

Through the haze of flu and flu medicine and general early Smarch doldrums comes a new episode of Step to the Music, another frolic through the polyrhythmic possibilities of Grey Area techno. Experiment #01 began with a block of techno, switched to a block of DnB, and then to a concluding block of techno. This one starts again with techno, but the second third uses Grey Area tunes to switch back and forth a few times between 127 BPM and 170 BPM, before settling on the latter and ending with straight DnB. So, this time taking a little more advantage of the rhythmic ambiguities to make the middle chunk feel more unsettled, more unmoored, more wobbling through a grey fog… or maybe that’s just the fever talking.

It all sounds very heady and intellectual, I realize… and while I’ll admit it does get pretty out there at parts, it does start out pretty poppy and accessible…
