Episode 120: youknowhowwedu

This week’s episode served to get me out of a few lazy ruts that I noticed I’d fallen into.

One of them is only playing music with a metronomic pulse that can be correctly ‘gridded’ in Traktor. This took over from my previous tendency to use the ‘warp’ feature on everything when I was using Ableton, putting even tunes that didn’t have a steady pulse on the metronomic rails so I that different tracks would snap together like Lego.

The other tendency was in how I was putting together playlists for episodes. It served the dual purpose of making everything easier to mix and narrowing down the music selection: picking a BPM and building an episode around it.

Episode 120 took many of the tracks that I’d been avoiding using because they didn’t fit a common BPM range or didn’t even have a steady beat and mashed them together. The end result is… well, something else.
