Episode 127: Cosmic Bounce
So, this episode combines various interests I’ve been exploring recently. It mixes and matches various strains of techno, from funky floor creations (JETS, Bicep) to ambient-ish home listening tunes (Chloé) to driving polyrhythmic explorations (Helena Hauff). It takes a tour of various international styles of underground club music (Air Max ’97, Dasychira, Sango, Jung Navy). It dips back in time in its middle third to reevaluate and rehabilitate a maligned and infamous genre that will remain nameless (2562, Truth, Kode9, Shackleton, Boxcutter). It also uses, to varying degrees of success, the “one weird trick” of pivoting the tempo using triplet feel. The first seven tunes are at about 109 BPM, Helena Hauff and Air Max ’97 team up to switch (all but seamlessly) to 145 BPM. Then the Knife song pivots, with not quite as much grace, back to the slower tempo for the final four tracks. I’m honestly unsure how well it gels as a full mix, but the elements are all there…
