Episode 131: LIVE! (3RD ANNIVERSARY)

Hooooooooray! Three years! this episode begins with an extended intro, intended to give me time to make sure I was actually broadcasting. It goes on possibly (definitely) too long, before launching into Turkish Delight’s “Around,” a song which I thought was more metronomic than it actually is, hence the clumsy transition into the Neil Landstrumm track which follows. Auspicious start!

I made a point of collecting a playlist for this show rather higgedly piggedly, and not doing any trial runs. This was to be LIVE live, by the seat of my pants. So it’s kinda all over the place. That was also intentional. I wanted to cover most, if not all, of the genres I play on the show. In truth, grime and d****** and techno got short-changed, while club and house and footwork are possibly over-represented.

Another feature of this mix is that I abandoned my usual rule of avoiding repeats. Are there tunes here I already played in previous episodes? I think so, but I refused to check.

The mix begins around 140 BPM and from there speeds up to 160 BPM, going through some faster club tracks. At 160 BPM there’s a block of footwork, capped by a tune from the new Aphex Twin EP that, the more I listen to, the more I think is Mr. James’ own take on the Chicago genre. Then up to Drum’n’Bass tempo for a while, exploring different moods of the breakbeat. Not many places to go from there, as my drill’n’bass collection is quite small, so time to drop to half-tempo (~85 BPM) for a slow Techno track and some hip hop. The rest of the mix speeds up gradually to ~130 BPM, including more club tracks, some nu-disco, straight dance-pop, and a healthy dollop of house.

BPM range: 85-170
