Episode 137: Neon Rave

If I had to fir a theme for this episode, it would have to be an anachronistic blend of rave sonics with contemporary club rhythms. Conveniently enough, the first track, a hard-banging techno number from Dan HabarNam, captures both elements– rave-y sirens coexisting with Jersey Club-esque kick patterns. Overland provides some acid, VILLAGE explores more vintage sounds in the track that gives this episode its name, and Ali da Rave God combines iconic piano stabs with the single most representative sound of the rave era with “Hoover Time.” After that, things take a more contemplative techno with contributions from Martyn, Karen Gwyer, LA-4A, O.G. Detroiter Robert Hood, and finally Providence, RI noise techno mandarin Container. From there, the mix gets more complex and cerebral, starting with A Made Up Sound and the herky-jerky start-stop of “Ahead.” Then Logos contributes his sparse remix of the M.E.S.H. oblique club anti-anthem “Scythians.” This sets the scene for the home stretch, which employs pummeling club beats, moody electronic melodies, and hip hop edits with a little bit more acid. Everything wraps up with an ambient techno warmdown courtesy of Kitkaliitto.

It’s a fun ride, and overall I’m quite happy with it. This is the antepenultimate episode of the year, as the next two weeks will be reruns of previous Christmas episodes, followed by a new Christmas episode, and then a Boxing Day episode to round out the month and the year. The first week of 2019 there will be a re-airing of the most popular episode of 2018 (to be determined over the next several weeks in a highly unscientific process), and then an episode (or more) recapping some of my favorite releases of the preceding year. But that’s getting pretty far ahead of things… for now, listen and enjoy to SttM 137 and get ready for a replay of classic SttM 013
