Top Five Episodes of 2018

Based on a very non-scientific, very hand-wavey analysis of two different metrics that I can in no way vouch for, I’ve compiled a list of the top five most popular episodes of Step to the Music from the past year. I have listened to these and tried to come to some conclusion about what makes for a good episode, and failed completely. If these were indeed your favorites, I have no idea why, nor what to emulate about them in order to please you in the future.

5. Episode #124: 300 Looks For The Summer

Summer jams from the South Pole. Outwards, never downup, and twirling, twirling, twirling toward madness. A return to “offensively eclectic” as a guiding principle. Things get crazy polyrhythmic at various points, so bring along yr calculator watch to keep track

4. Episode #128: Time 2 Lose

I did quite a few footwork-centric episodes this year, and this is certainly one of them. Its middle portion strays into Drum’n’Bass territory before going even further afield, incorporating experimental pop and even Middle Eastern electronica

3. Episode #126: Fear of Silence

The even numbered episodes are KILLING IT! Another wildly eclectic episode, with a loose focus on dance rock, hip hop, club variations, and post-disco mutations at around the 100 BPM mark. Things get verrrry strange around the 35 minute mark, which describes many if not most of my episodes, but this one goes especially off the rails. There’s even some noise rock tossed in!

2. Episode #133: Down For Real

Well, so much for even numbers! This episode focuses on the overlap between techno and contemporary club, and seems to be making an accidental point that complexity and catchiness are not so mutually exclusive as many would insist

1. ?????

You thought I was just going to tell you, Mr. Bond? It’s another footwork-centric episode, and it’s another odd-numbered episode, but if you want to find out which one it is, you gotta tune in Wednesday night, January 2, at 11E/8P to RadioNOPE for an encore presentation of the MOST POPULAR episode of 2018. Get your bets in, kids…
