Episode 155: Hypersigil

Here’s an episode that returns us to the well-trod path of drum’n’bass music, most of it Autonomic in variety. Things start out oldschool with Roni Size and his Reprazent project. Next up is Astrophonica label-head Fracture, except from an EP out on Autonomic powerhouse Exit Records. After that, a track from Lightless Records head Fanu, except it’s from an EP released by Goldie’s legendary Metalheadz.

Torana doesn’t run a label, so it’s less ironic that “Ternion” is from an EP released by Weaponry, Homemade Weapons’ label. But it’s followed by a track from the recent Samurai Records comp from Homemade Weapons and his Russian partner in crime Torn. It’s almost like I was doing it on purpose, except I’m nowhere near that clever. I only noticed it once the mix was mastered and ready to play.

The middle third follows several Autonomic mainstays down the rabbit hole from Clarity’s relatively straightforward half-time D’n’B to one of Ena’s noisiest noise experiments. Then everything resets with some random Milwaukee noise rock courtesy of Anti-Vax.

The rest is a rising momentum to Es.Tereo’s frenetic “LV 426,” followed by dBridge’s chiming, ethereal “My Night Sky” to close things out. Also, dBridge runs Exit Records, and this track is off an Exit compilation, so things finally match up…
