Top Episodes of ’21

“Star Trek: Discovery” added a new term to the canon: the Vulcan Hello. Any time a Vulcan ship encountered a Klingon ship, they knew from long experience to fire first and do anything else later. I’m tempted to give the same greeting to 2022, given recent experience. No benefit of the doubt, just kick that year in the face, baby or no, before it has the chance to do anything to me. No fresh start, just fresh Hell

All that said, January is still a time to look forward and look back, and it is in such a spirit that I look at the previous year of SttM. The same random agglomeration of Facebook likes, Twitter likes, shares, reposts, and straight gut feeling was applied as last year… and it wasn’t even close. 5-3 is a tight race, with even a tie for third, then one episode crushing them all for second, and finally another firmly on top. The list follows:

5. Episode 221: Walkin’ With Jah

An hour of deep bass and dank beats, featuring classic Dubstep and fierce instrumental Grime. There are, it should almost go without saying, a few curveballs in the mix, including but not limited to: shoegaze, house, and club

4. Episode 209: The Pusher Man

Similar to the above, but less focused on Dubstep, with a more diverse playlist giving more time to the other genres, plus an infusion of Jersey Club sounds\

3. Episode 214: Get Into My Groove / Episode 215: Ruffage (Tie)

214 is one of those episodes that just couldn’t be constrained by an hour. Lucky for me there’s no show scheduled after SttM, so I can give these special episodes the time they need. 85 minutes of house and disco bliss!

The following episode was back to an hour. Very similar to episode 221, but with an even stronger focus on the artists who were essential to the creation of early Dubstep (back before some dumb American with a silly haircut ruined it for everyone) (actually, two years into cutting my own hair I shouldn’t be throwing stones)

2. Episode 222: Happy Solstice, Merry Yule!

Anything BUT annual, here is the fourth SttM Winter holiday episode in seven years. This is another wild mix of mashups featuring your favorite (and least favorite) seasonal classics. Another one that blew right past the hour mark, coming in at 75 minutes
