Episdoe 123: Mustn’t Hurry

Last week’s episode explored the slower range of club music, the faster end of hip hop, downtempo breaks, dembow swagger, and even a sweet taste of bhangra. Starting things off, Lao’s remix of Fever Ray’s “Mustn’t Hurry” takes the title literally and tames the original’s frenetic pace to a herky deconstructed flow. Two tracks from the recent CyberSonicLA compilation explore the latest directions in club manipulations, alternating with retrofuturistic hip-hop from Prefuse 73 and MF Doom (using his Viktor Vaughan persona). This club/hip-hop back and forth continues until Photek introduces the second act with some lounge-y downtempo, which mood continues until king midas sound makes a left turn into reggae-tinged dembow. Metra Bae and GIBA (refixing Gwen Stefani’s take on Fiddler on the Roof) extend the dembow before handing things off to The Veronicas, who serve up a honey-sweet hook-laden apology in the bhangra vein. Florentino hypes things up in his romantico style, setting the stage for Dawn Richards and Machinedrum’s anthem of rebirth.
