This Week: Boxing Day Dub

Tune in to Radio NOPE tomorrow, December 26, at 11E/8P for a brand new episode of Step to the Music! Since it’s going to air during that weird haunted netherworld week between Christmas and New Year’s, I got it into my head at some point that the episode should be all dub techno.

I’ve done techno episodes before, even ones that included dub techno tracks, but filling an entire hour with the ghostly sound of empty space, of skeletal beats drenched in reverb and echo, always seemed a bit much. Well, in truth it’s an idea that never occurred to me before, possibly because it runs counter to the entire SttM mission of getting asses in movement, rather than spooking asses out and having them sit rocking in a corner.

But it makes sense. Or it made sense when I had the idea, and now I’m trying my best to recapture exactly what the heck I was thinking. We’re entering a timeless space, everything halted by holiday and vacation, awaiting the coming of January to restart time and give everything a fresh start. And what music plays with the same time dilation, the simultaneous halting and stretching, more centrally to its identity than dub?

And I already did a dub episode. It was like the second or third episode I ever did. So dub techno it is! My Boxing Day gift to y’all…
