Episode 163: Some Good Shit From 2019

The first episode of the new decade spends 85 minutes looking back. Some of these songs I’ve played on previous episodes, and some of them are songs that I haven’t, but mainly because they don’t fit the format especially well… which is to say that this is an unusually rock-heavy episode. Altin Gün and Hatchie bring the grooves, but the mix goes for a full 30 minutes before any full-on electronic beats are heard.

For the next act of the mix we enter the realm of 160 BPM, where I spent a few episodes in 2016. Neo-jungle, footwork, the gradiated zone in between the two, and finally something from the new pseudo-genre of Turbo, fusing elements of techno into the mix; Rhi and FKA Twigs drop things into half-time with tunes from their respective brilliant 2019 releases; Rational Youth, who did not put out anything this year, but whose first landmark album did get the reissue treatment, pick things back up with a peppy little number about nuclear apocalypse.

Things wrap up with some more dance rock, interspersed with an underground club tune and a Hard Drum banger. And here’s a secret: there’s more to come next week! MORE GOOD SHIT!
