Top Five Most Popular Episodes of 2020!

Methodology, if you care: each episode was given points for likes and shares on Facebook, likes and retweets on Twitter, and score on iTunes. Points were weighted and aggregated largely based on gut feeling… aaaand we got us a list!

DEAD F@%*ING LAST

First off: Booby prize is split between episodes 186 and 182, a two-way tie for last with zero likes apiece. Episode 186 is Texan Levee Grime, an eclectic mix of grime, dubstep, post-punk and more. Got no love. Episode 192 is We Lose the Night, a dark and gothic mix of rock, hip hop, and D’n’B… another eclectic one (a pattern perhaps?). Zilch. I happen to think neither one is that bad… so maybe give them another listen?

THE MUDDLE IN THE MIDDLE

The rankings from 10 to 5 are a logjam of three-, four- and even five-way ties, so we’ll just skip down to fourth place, a two-way tie of episodes with seven points apiece.

TIED FOR FOURTH

165, Boy U Get 2 Lit, is a genre sandwich, starting and ending with the bread of indie rock– the opener a moody post-alternative number from britpop supergroup Piroshka. The meat of the mix is Footwork and neo-Jungle jams, with some slow D’n’B in the middle. Then the last slice of bread is some heavenly rock-motorik indie jamz from Automatic and Corridor.

164, Some MORE Good Shit From 2019, is the 92 minute behemoth that is part two of my massive two-part “Favorites of 2019” mix. It’s got everything AND the kitchen sink, including hip hop, Hard Drum, underground club, disco, dance pop, dance rock, and a good chunk of house. It’s got it all. I honestly can’t argue with its high placement.

THIRD PLACE

In third place with eight points is 163, Some Good Shit From 2019, part one of the abovementioned three-hour behemoth. 80 minutes. It starts out with a long stretch of dance rock, of the type that I often can’t fit into regular episodes, and which so often finds its home in these retrospectives. From there we move to a stretch of Footwork and neo-Jungle, similar to the meat of 165, before moving on to MORE dance rock and finally some club and hip hop. Abovementioned Piroshka ends this episode, suggesting that maybe I should play them more often! Think you can just subtract 160 from the episode number to get its ranking? THINK AGAIN!

SECOND PLACE

In second place with nine points is 196, Spectra, the final episode of 2020 and one that just aired last week! That’s number two with a bullet! Another extra long episode, this one is ninety minutes of deep techno, and very different from what I usually do. Possibly I should change that?

NUMBER ONE!

Comfortably in first place with eleven points is… well, you’ll just have to tune in tomorrow night at 10E/7P to find out! Hint/spoiler: it’s another long one! 80% of the top four episodes are extra long… is this the universe/fan base trying to tell me something?
