Episode 132: The Future’s Kinda Sketchy
The initial idea for this episode was a bunch of techno and a bunch of gqom… but when I had the playlist worked out it was three times longer than I could even consider fitting into an hour, so I started cutting and cutting and ended up with only two gqom tracks, plus two D’n’B tunes and a neo-Krautrock jawn and a freestyle number.
BEAK> gets Can worship right, capturing the vibe without slavish imitation. “Brean Down” also gives this episode its name in a call for unity that would make any 80’s hardcore band blush with envy. From there, a more electronic sound is introduced courtesy of Montreal multi-instrumentalist Ouri, a sound which continues through technos funky, minimal, gqom, soulful, and finally grey area-style triplet-y. Oh, and when those triplets come… do I take advantage of them to pivot to 170 BPM for a bit? You bet your sweet colon I do! And then reverso back to techno tempo for another round, rounded off with a breakbeat workout from Akkord and a freestyle jam with alternating English and Spanish vocals courtesy of Nice & Wild.
